Remove Background from Image using PS

Removing background from image using photoshop is a simple task. No doubt there are tools such as Magic eraser that can remove backgrounds but using them is very frustating. Photoshop is best option for removing background and within minutes you will be able to do this. Often we come across situations where we have to give different background to an image or just simply remove the background. In this article we will learn how to do this.  So lets see how this works.

Follow these simple steps to remove background from images-
Step 1: Open the image in photoshop.

You might be wondering how photoshop will remove this complex background. You will get to know the power of photoshop, just follow the simple steps.

Step 2: In Layer pallete Right click your background layer and select Layer From Background.

It automatically renames as Layer 0, press OK.

Note: Your Layer pallete should have only one single layer as shown in following screenshot.

Step 3: Select Lasso Tool.

Make sure that your options are same as in above screenshot. Most importantly, Anti-alias in unchecked.
Using Lasso Tool draw a rough selection around the image.

Step 4: Now press Ctrl+Shift+J to move your rough selection to a new layer.
Next delete Layer 0. You will be left with

Step 5: This is the most important step. Select Eraser Tool. Set the following options in your control pallete;

Important: Make sure selected mode is Pencil to provide sharp edges to eraser.
Now using the eraser delete the unwanted parts around image;

You have to create a continous gap around the image.
After this, holding Ctrl select Layer 1. This will load a selection around image.
Step 6: Open CHANNELS pallete and click the icon to create a new alpha channel.

Now go to Edit-->Fill and set Use: White.

Now press Ctrl+D to deselect the image.
Step 7: Select Paint Bucket Tool and choose foreground color BLACK.

Fill the unwanted areas with black color using Paint Bucket. Be careful while doing this.

Step 8: Press Ctrl and click on Alpha 1 Channel to load the new selection.
Next, Select RGB from Channels pallete.

Now press Ctrl+Shift+J to move the selection to a new layer. You can delete other layers after getting the image.

So this is the required image. Easy isn't it? Now, you can even apply different background to it.
Note: If the final image contains some unwanted part, you can remove it with eraser.
